Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSO)

The Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) of the University ofSoutheastern Philippines conducted a two-day training-workshop on Patent Information Search to the faculty of the Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus last July 19-20, 2016.

The patent search training was conducted as a follow-up from the first seminar on the fundamentals of Intellectual Property and the Basics of Patents. The lecture part was held at the PSHS-SMC Mini-Auditorium and then the participants were asked to transfer to the school‟s Computer Laboratory for the workshop proper.

Dr. Romel V. Gador along with Engr. Michael V. Machica and Ms. Mary Vivien S. Jala, ITSO-USeP Manager and Technical staff respectively, facilitated the training.

As was emphasized by the resource speakers during the activity, patent search is the key to the conduct of any research. For an idea, an invention, or a study to be truly "new," which means that someone else has not yet registered it with the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), the researchers should evaluate its originality by performing a thorough patent search.

Hands-on exercises such as problem-solution approach application, patent search report preparation, and prior arts analysis closed the 2-day training. (By Sheila M. Allong, PSHS-SMC ITSO Times)
